Poole in Dorset, not only has a number of terrific sandy beaches but also boasts a large number of activities for dry or wet weather. Here are five great things to do in Poole this Summer with the kids!
1. Dinosaur Museum, Dorchester
There are all the dinosaur things kids love! Fossils, skeletons and life size reconstructions of dinosaurs. The multi media displays keep kids spell bound for a while and even parents really enjoy this treat.
2. Brownsea Island
To reach this island you need to take a ferry but once you’re there it’s a delight! This harbour is Europes largest natural harbour and is rich in wildlife and history. If you’re lucky you’ll spot deer, red squirrel and wading birds while you’re there!
There’s a lot on offer from getting wild with a range of events and activities to open air theatre, guided walks and activity weekends. The island is open to the public daily from March to end of October!
Everyone loves a castle and this one is really romantic with fantastic sea views!
This castle is over 1000 years old and has secret places and tales of treachery and treason abound in the murder holes . History springs to life here and there are great picnic spots and a lovely 18th Century tea room where you can indulge in a Dorset cream tea. The gardens are magnificent and there are always great events happening in and around the castle.
4. Visit Guernsey
Condor Ferries will whisk you off to Guernsey for a day if you’re in the mood for adventure. It’s a great trip and Guernsey offers great scenery, wild beaches and a cosmopolitan air in its centre. Shopping and eating is great there and it’s a perfect spot to people watch and mooch!
If it’s overcast and the sandy beaches hold little allure, remember that Poole is rich in history and offers a fascinating town walk called Poole’s Cockle Trail.
This walk takes you through an in depth walk of the old town taking in the museum with it’s superb views of the harbour and where it’s still free to get in and you can see the story of this port come to life.
The town itself is lively with many good restaurants, bars, attractions like the many parks and the pottery and gift shops. Live music abounds in the Summer!
